Set in 1803, this novel is a sequel to Jane Austen’s beloved novel “Pride and Prejudice”.
The story unfolds six years after the events of “Pride and Prejudice,” focusing on the married life of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy at their estate, Pemberley. Elizabeth has grown into her role as the lady of the house. Together, she and Darcy have two healthy young sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles.
Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy’s sister Georgiana. Everyone is excited as preparations get under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball.
Unfortunately, the tranquility of their world is shattered when a murder takes place on their grounds. A coach carrying Elizabeth’s sister, Lydia, and her ne’er-do-well husband, Wickham, arrives in distress, and they soon discover a dead man in the nearby woods.
The investigation that ensues brings together familiar characters from Austen’s original work and introduces new ones as they navigate the complexities of the case, societal expectations, and secrets from the past. P.D. James skillfully combines the wit and charm of Austen’s characters with a compelling murder mystery, creating a unique blend of Regency-era romance and detective fiction.
“Death Comes to Pemberley” pays homage to the world of Jane Austen while weaving an original and engaging tale of love, betrayal, and justice, captivating both Austen enthusiasts and mystery fans alike.
